The Power of Starting Small

I’ve been reflecting a lot this week on how healing really happens—not in one big leap, but in thousands of small steps.

When my world first shattered, I thought I had to “fix” myself overnight. I wanted answers, clarity, and peace right away. But what I found instead was a slow and steady rhythm of grace. It was saying yes to getting out of bed. It was taking a walk when I’d rather pull the covers over my head. It was showing up for my kids when I felt like I had nothing left to give.

Healing doesn’t always feel triumphant in the moment. Often, it feels like survival. But every small step counts. Every tear, every prayer, every moment of choosing hope over despair is part of the work of becoming whole again.

Unbroken was born out of those quiet, ordinary steps—the ones no one clapped for, but that saved me anyway. Writing this book has reminded me that the little things truly do matter: the choice to keep going, to be present, to breathe, to love again.

If you’re in a season where the next step feels impossible, I want you to know this: you don’t have to run a marathon today. Just take the next small step. That’s where healing begins.
